NEXTORCH eStar 1,300-Lumen Dual-Light Headlamp

NEXTORCH eStar 1,300-Lumen Dual-Light Headlamp

Spec sheets can make any headlamp sound impressive—1,300 lumens, dual beams, proprietary optics—but the real question is how it performs when your hands are busy, your visibility is limited, and conditions aren’t forgiving. We spent several nights testing the eStar from NEXTORCH and even recorded our review and night test (watch the video below in the article).

First Impressions: Lightweight but Purposeful

At just over 4 ounces with the battery installed, the eStar feels noticeably lighter than most “pro-grade” headlamps. The housing is compact and sits close to the forehead, which helps with stability—especially during movement.

The headband deserves mention: breathable, adjustable, and surprisingly comfortable over long sessions. It doesn’t feel like an afterthought, which is often the case at this price point.

Beam Quality: Where It Stands Out

The biggest differentiator here is the Claw Optics™ system—and unlike a lot of branded tech, this one actually shows up in use.

Instead of a harsh central hotspot with dim spill, the beam is smooth and evenly distributed. In practical terms:

  • Close-up tasks (like tying fishing knots or working on equipment) don’t get blown out by glare
  • Mid-range visibility feels natural, without constantly adjusting brightness
  • The transition between spot and flood is seamless, especially in mixed mode

The 12° spot beam has enough reach for trail scanning, while the 90° flood covers wide work areas effectively. Using both together feels intuitive rather than redundant. In open spaces mixed spot and flood beams are the best choice while we found that in closed spaces flood only is perfect (see the video test in this article)

Dual-Light Functionality: More Than a Gimmick

The inclusion of red light isn’t new—but execution matters. Here, switching between white and red is quick and logical, and the red mode is genuinely useful:

  • Preserves night vision during navigation
  • Minimizes disturbance in group or wildlife settings
  • Works well for low-profile tasks like map reading

The SOS mode is there if needed, though most users will rarely touch it.

Light Mode Dial and Stepless Dimming Wheel are THE BEST controls on any headlamp – super easy to use!

Controls & Usability

Controls are one of 3 best qualities of eStar Headlamp. Central dial is main control. Always in front position of the headlamp, you will be able to find it night without a smallest problem every time. Many other headlamps have on/off button somewhere on the top of the headlamp so in a dark (or if you wearing gloves) it is hard to know what is a top and what is a bottom. Somehow we always looks for that button on the opposite side. Often, even when we know where it is we have a problem to press it with our finger because those buttons knows to be small.

Not whit eStar Headlamp. Dial is right there, just grab it even with gloves and turn it.

Stepless dimming wheel is fantastic. Big and chunky, you can turn it easily even with gloves. It is so big that is easy to find it (it sticks out). It works flawlessly and it is really useful. The stepless dimming wheel allows fine control instead of forcing you through preset levels. This is especially helpful when you need “just enough” light without overkill. Stepless brightness control has a brightness memory. Stepless dimming wheel is my favorite part of eStar Headlamp.

Battery Flexibility: A Practical Advantage

One of the eStar’s most useful features is its dual-power setup:

  • Rechargeable Li-polymer battery (USB-C) for regular use
  • AAA compatibility as a fallback

In testing, this flexibility proved valuable. When the rechargeable pack ran low during extended use, swapping to AAA batteries kept things going without interruption. We were most happy when we found out that in the package Nextorch provided 2 Li-polymer 1200 mAh batteries. Those batteries and small, compact and light and the second one is a great backup battery that is so easy to carry in the pocket. When you turn eStar on, on the top of it there are 3 blue LEDs that will show you status of charge of your battery. That is simple but very useful feature.

Runtime will vary widely depending on brightness levels, but for moderate use, it holds up well through a full evening.

In the package you will get 2 of these Lithium Polymer batteries

Durability: Built for Real Use

Housing of  is built from PC + ABS engineering plastics. I don’t know much about tesch specs of industrial plastic but this one looks and feels built like a tank. It doesn’t feel fragile at all and I would be confident to take it to any job or adventure. With an IP67 rating, the eStar handled rain, splashes, and dusty conditions without issue.

We dropped it a few times from head height during testing—no performance issues afterward. We did not tested eStar under the water even though it is water resistance IP67 rated. An IP67 rating means a device is completely protected against dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

Who It’s For

The eStar hits a sweet spot between casual and professional use. It’s well-suited for:

  • Outdoor enthusiasts (hiking, fishing, hunting)
  • DIY and maintenance work
  • Emergency kits and backup lighting
  • Anyone needing a reliable, lightweight headlamp without overspending

This one will be in my car as backup light for any problems on the road in the night, from flat tire to some engine problems. With headlamp my hands will be free to work and not to hold the flashlight.

Final Verdict

The eStar provides great light, great light modes, super effective On/Off and dimming controls, high quality build, hi-quality headband, two ways how to power the headlamp and two rechargeable batteries.
